1951 – Cricket

CRICKET-SUMMER TERM, 1951.

The School XI had a very successful season under the leadership of J. C. Scriven. The team spirit was excellent. The batting of the team showed considerable improvement, as the season progressed, while the bowling was again good and backed up by keen fielding.

J, C. Scriven, R. B. Ireland, W. F. Lewis and D. Say who were the backbone of the team, were given County Trials. J. C. Scriven and W. F. Lewis also played for the Stroud and District Men's XI giving creditable performances.

Several Form IV boys who played for the School XI, should form the nucleus of another good team next year. Of these P. Coleman showed promise as ft bowler and bat, while F. Hart did well behind the stumps.

The Junior XI had a good season but the? batting was weak. The bowling of B. Gardiner and A. Bell was good but often erratic owing to concentration on speed rather than on accuracy. D. Hewett and L. Stephens batted well while C, Stephens, J. Summers, R. Mills, B. Gardiner and J. Russell showed promise. A. Bell is to be congratulated on being selected for the North v. South Trial Match.

As an experiment a Junior XI (under 13) was formed, playing two matches against the Marling School. These matches were notable for the keenness of the boys which promises well for the future. D. Hewett, L, Stephens, C. Gay and R. McKeever put up good performances.

House Matches were contested keenly. With the batman-ship showing improvement, it has become obvious that the allotted time is inadequate since many of the matches were drawn.

Finally, a word of praise for the School scorer L. Smith, who carried out his duties quietly and efficiently.
